  • Short Bio / Excerpt:

Dr. Marcus Leiwe is an accomplished neuroscientist, senior data consultant, and entrepreneur known for bridging the gap between rigorous academic research and commercial artificial intelligence. Born to a multicultural family of mixed German and Malaysian-Chinese descent, Leiwe grew up navigating diverse environments across the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Japan. This unique upbringing instilled a global perspective that would later influence both his collaborative academic endeavors and his adaptive approach to international technology consulting.

Leiwe’s academic foundation began at King's College London, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from 2004 to 2007. Driven by a fascination with the brain's intricacies, he pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Developmental Neurobiology at the same institution, graduating in 2013. His doctoral work focused heavily on understanding the precise wiring mechanisms of the nervous system, laying the groundwork for a highly technical career centered around complex data and biological systems.

Following his doctorate, Leiwe transitioned to full-time scientific research in Japan, spending nearly a decade contributing to pioneering neurological advancements. He worked as a research scientist at the prestigious RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe and later served as an Assistant Professor at Kyushu University. During this academic chapter, his laboratory co-developed "Technibow" (and "Tetbow"), a groundbreaking seven-color stochastic neuron-tracing system published in journals like Nature Communications. This automated reconstruction method allowed scientists to map and trace densely packed neonatal brain wiring with unprecedented precision.

Recognizing the immense potential of applying academic data methodologies to industry problems, Leiwe eventually pivoted toward data science and commercial AI. He completed specialized fellowships with data programs like Pivigo's Science to Data Science (S2DS) and upskilled across machine learning, computer vision, and cloud architectures. His industry career accelerated as he took on senior consulting and engineering roles, such as working as a Senior Data Scientist at the life sciences software company MetaCell, and leading AI development initiatives in deep learning, fintech, and fraud prevention.

Today, Leiwe is based in Hong Kong, where he operates as the founder of Leiwe & Partners, a boutique AI and data science consultancy. His firm is comprised of advanced PhD-level data professionals who intentionally apply scientific rigor to commercial AI projects rather than adhering to traditional "move fast and break things" tech mentalities. Under his leadership, the firm develops high-impact, private technical pipelines, such as securing sensitive cloud-free refugee data for local NGOs and designing bespoke automated machine learning solutions for global clients.
